Ultra-Conservative Former Legislator José Antonio Kast Elected as Chile Incoming Leader.
Following a conclusive second-round vote, far-right figure José Antonio Kast has secured the presidential office in Chile.
A Commanding Victory
With over 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast secured 58.17% of the votes, defeating leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.
This signifies Kast's third attempt at the presidency, having earlier been beaten by the incumbent president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 runoff.
Platform Focused On Law and Order and Immigration
Known for his unwavering Catholic views and admiration for the period of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was mostly focused on promises to combat rising violence and radically reduce immigration.
He consistently cited immigrants, notably the approximately 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for security issues. During the campaign, he issued an stern warning for them to depart before the inauguration or face expulsion.
His plans featured controversial measures such as erecting camps, border walls, security fences, and increasing the army presence on the northernmost border.
Part of a Broader Trend
Many commentators interpret Kast's win as fitting into a broader right-wing trend in South America, following recent electoral outcomes in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Nevertheless, other analysts further view it as a part of the established swing of power between left and right governments since Chile's establishment of democracy in 1990.
Governing Without a Strong Mandate
In spite of his clear electoral victory, Kast will not hold an overall majority in Congress, not in the lower house nor the Senate, even if various right-leaning parties are combined together.
This political landscape may challenge his policy goals, including a promise to cut public spending by billions within a year and a half—a plan for which he has not detailed a clear explanation.
"We have several aspects about how a Kast government will be that we don't know because he has not said his methods for implement them," said a political science expert.
The analyst stated, "Regarding fiscal matters, it is highly probable we will see adjustment measures common for the right-wing. But the area with much less doubt is on security policy, because that has been his central theme during the campaign."
