The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Selected the Incorrect Critical Role Song
The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated series from the beloved role-playing group, unveiled a new opening credits. It features the beloved cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals fighting hard and taking names, while teasing at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for key figures such as Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, Fjord.
Overall, the intro looks amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that something was missing in the music selection.
The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. It's a track originating from the official score of that title, the second release released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a great sentimental choice, and I believe that fans of the sequel series will love its inclusion.
Personally, The Mighty Nein's intro doesn't quite capture the hype and excitement that was part of the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician the artist, became an immediate hit for me when it was first revealed in that year, and it improved further when cast member Sam Riegel added lyrics to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the song was memorable and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. This track that excites you before you dive into an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The show's opening with "the new song" doesn't strike the same chords for me. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Naturally, the creators has already said that the series will have a few surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its opening appears as among these.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or want a head start to get to know the personas of the second series, the original episodes are accessible on the audio platform and the video site.
