Vicky McClure are set to reprise their characters in the acclaimed crime series

The beloved police drama Line of Duty is officially returning for its 7th season, announced by the BBC.

An upcoming six-episode series written by Jed Mercurio starts production in Belfast this spring, as confirmed by the production team.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the comeback, stating she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar added, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together next year."

The previous series wrapped up in recent years with a finale that attracted more than 17 million viewers. Rumors about a new season have been widespread ever since, but official word only came recently.

New Challenges for AC-12

Series seven begins with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and renamed as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain working to combat misconduct within the law enforcement.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, these officers are assigned their "most delicate case to date."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of criminal networks, faces allegations of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator.

Yet, his case could be a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still active in the shadows, the teaser hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had so many followers watch the ups and downs of the unit over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be coming back for a new season."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor described appearing in the series as "the role of a career".

"Not only the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.

Vicky McClure stated: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

The veteran actor commented: "While anticipating the unit days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming next year."

"Pleased with the news and looking forward to those unexpected plot developments."

Show History

Line of Duty launched in the early 2010s and became one of the most popular television series of the last decade, attracting notable actors such as Lennie James.

Broadcasters has not yet announced when the new season will premiere.

The finale of season six brought the extended plot about the search for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and producers indicated at the time there were no plans for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the corporation announced on this week that a new season is now in development.
