Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals buying these medications should be informed of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a reversion to original mass within about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally have a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a sudden return of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," described one woman.

The struggle is worsened if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Interest

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined lifestyle support.
