Extreme heat and raging bushfires have swept through the dry landscape of Western Australia. As temperatures expected to continue climbing above 40C (104F) over the next few days, a severe alert for extreme heat has been declared across much of the southwestern region.

Widespread Extreme Heat Warnings Throughout the Region

These conditions come after recent bushfires in New South Wales, which caused the destruction of homes and loss of life. Severe heat alerts have additionally been issued for the coming days in areas within South Australia and New South Wales, as a system of atmospheric pressure moves eastward, bringing intense heat to a broad swath of the area.

The mix of extremely dry vegetation and unbroken high temperatures presents a dangerous situation for emergency crews.

In another part of the world, a metropolis was plunged into darkness recently after powerful winds damaged the urban power grid, with falling trees knocking out power lines. The weather conditions also led to significant transport delays at a key airport, where hundreds of flights were grounded. Substantial impact on electrical infrastructure is anticipated to create further issues as utility companies work urgently to restore power to over 1 million inhabitants.

Unusual Mist Blankets Sunny Region

Meanwhile, a valley famed for its sunny weather and plentiful sunshine has experienced one of its dullest and foggiest periods on record. A particular form of low cloud, which typically lingers for only a few days, has been remarkably extensive and persistent this year, keeping the mercury at a major airport below 8C for more than a week – the longest such streak in over three decades. The prolonged fog has been driven by unprecedented fall rainfall that left the ground waterlogged.

And in Spain, a weather system has ushered in intense rain, powerful gales and even snowfall to a set of islands – conditions many would not associate with this popular tourist spot. While snow is not unheard of at elevated areas, the system delivered some of the deepest accumulations since 2016 to a national park, compelling its closure.

In addition to the snow, fierce northerly winds buffeted the island chain, with gusts reaching 50mph recorded on multiple islands. The effect of the weather event is forecast to ease this week with more seasonal weather taking hold.
